Fatal Pedestrian/Train Collision

An unidentified male pedestrian was killed in a collision with an Amtrak train Monday evening.

On Monday, January 13, 2020, about 6:47pm, San Leandro Police Officers responded to the report of a train/pedestrian collision near the intersection of Davis Street and Alvarado Street.  Upon their arrival, officers discovered the male pedestrian about 250 feet north of Davis Street on the railroad tracks.  He did not survive the impact with the train and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Investigators learned the northbound Amtrak train was travelling at an estimated speed of 79 miles per hour as it approached the Davis Street railroad crossing. The railroad crossing warning system operated properly as the railroad arms lowered to block vehicular traffic and the red warning lights activated as the train approached Davis Street.  However, for unknown reasons, the pedestrian, who was walking westbound on the north sidewalk of Davis Street, did not take notice of the warnings and walked directly into the path of the passing train.  No vehicles were involved in the collision.

Davis Street between Orchard Avenue and Alvarado street was closed for approximately two hours while Amtrak, Union Pacific, and SLPD personnel investigated the collision.

As of Tuesday, January 14, 2020, the Alameda County Coroner’s Office has not released the identification of the male pedestrian.
