News Release: Police Arrest Four Suspects in Grab and Run Grand Theft at Macys

Police arrested four suspects after another shopper witnessed them shoplifting large amounts of merchandise at Macy's and called police on Sunday afternoon. On Sunday, January 12, 2020 at around 3:48 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a report of a grab and run theft at Macy's located at 180 El Camino Real in the Stanford Shopping Center. The preliminary investigation revealed a female shopper witnessed four women stealing armloads of clothing and shoes from Macy's. The witness began taking video of the suspects and followed them. One of the suspects became agitated that she was being recorded and she lunged at the witness and kicked her in the buttocks. The witness did not receive injuries. As the suspects left Macy's, they dropped some of the stolen items in various locations outside and fled in a vehicle. The witness followed the suspects into the parking lot and called police with their descriptions. Responding officers located a vehicle with suspects inside who matched the description and stopped it at University Avenue and Donohoe Street in East Palo Alto. Police found stolen clothing inside the vehicle. Officers estimate more than five thousand dollars worth of merchandise was stolen. Police collected evidence and conducted interviews and determined the suspects had conspired to steal at the shopping center for the purpose of selling the items. Officers arrested all four and are investigating whether the suspects are connected to other similar thefts Police booked 28-year-old Nicole Schrell Garner, 19-year-old Destiny Faith Shephard (both of Antioch), Haley Cheri King, and Janera Antonette Fraser (both 19-years-old and of East Palo Alto) for Organized Retail Theft, Grand Theft and Possession of Stolen Property (all felonies) into the San Jose Main Jail. Fraser faces an additional charge of battery (misdemeanor) for kicking the witness. All were booked into the San Jose Main Jail. Their booking photos are attached to this news release (note: the booking photos have been removed pursuant to AB994 as of December 2023).
