Consider Fire Safety when plugging in your vehicle this winter.

Fire Safety is an important consideration when using a block heater and/or remote vehicle starters

Block Heaters:
1. Make sure the cords are in good shape, replace any cracked or frayed cords or broken connections
2. Use a grounded extension cord (three pronged plug) to plug the heater into the exterior outlet.
3. Put something on your steering wheel as a reminder to unplug before you drive away.
The Muni Plug at 20 program website includes other good reminders about the importance of plugging in your vehicle during cold weather.

Remote Vehicle Starters:
1. Ensure your vehicle is maintained properly.
2. Look for cracked or loose wiring or electrical problems, get them fixed.
3. Look for oil or other fluid leaks, get them fixed and cleaned up.
4. Make sure the oil cap is on tightly
5. Clean up any fuel spills on or near the vehicle.

It is smart to park your vehicles as far from any structures as practical to prevent a vehicle fire from spreading to the building.
If a vehicle fire does occur call 911 immediately and keep everyone away from the vehicle.
When the fire first starts - if you have been trained in the use of fire extinguishers attempt to extinguish the fire. Household fire extinguishers are typically not an effective tool for vehicle fires since the vehicle fires spread so quickly.
