This morning around 6:40am, Solano Sheriff’s Department personnel reported locating a male subject down in the roadway in the 2400 block of North Texas Street in Fairfield. Fairfield Police officers responded and took over the incident. Initial evidence indicates a vehicle collision occurred involving a pedestrian who was in the roadway.
The pedestrian, Walter Ashurst, 49 years of age from Fairfield sustained major injuries from the collision. Police, fire and medical personnel attempted to render aid, but Ashurst succumbed to his injuries and died at a local hospital. The Fairfield Police Department’s Traffic Unit responded and took over the investigation, which is still on going.
The driver of the vehicle, a 29-year-old male Fairfield resident stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. At this time, impairment does not appear to be a factor. Investigators will be looking at evidence to include video of the collision to determine what occurred. Video footage shows a number of motorists present, but not involved when the collision happened. Incidents like this are a sobering reminder for motorists and pedestrians alike. Pedestrians, please abide by the traffic laws. Use crosswalks and controlled intersections to cross roadways. Look both ways and verify it is safe to cross whether you have the right of way or not. Motorists please watch out for pedestrians and yield whether you have the right of way or not.
