Traffic stop leads to arrest of Elberfeld duo.
On December 31, 2019, at 7:55 p.m. Deputy Zach Lienemann conducted a traffic stop on a White 1994 Chevy van near the intersection of County Road 1250 South and US 41. Upon approaching the vehicle Deputy Lienemann identified the driver as 59 year old Edwin J. Smith of Elberfeld. During a roadside investigation Deputy Lienemann ran Mr. Smith through the Indiana Data And Communications System and discovered that Mr. Smith had never been issued a valid Indiana Operator’s License. While on the traffic stop Mr. Smith’s wife drove to the scene and began looking for a valid registration and insurance card in the vehicle. While Mr. Smith’s wife 55-year-old Rebecca Smith of Elberfeld was looking through the vehicle Deputy Lienemann observed a rifle in the vehicle. At that point Deputy Lienemann asked Mr. and Mrs. Smith to step out of the vehicle. While speaking with Rebecca Smith she admitted that she had Methamphetamines in her bag. At that point Deputy Lienemann placed Mr. and Mrs. Smith into custody and continued his investigation. At the conclusion of his investigation Mr Edwin Smith and Mrs. Rebecca Smith were both transported to the Gibson County Jail. Edwin Smith was charged with Operator Never Licensed. He has since posted a $450 bond. Rebecca Smith was charged with Possession of Paraphernalia, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Methamphetamines. She has also since posted a $750 bond.
