Traffic stop leads to arrest of Ohio man on gun and drug charges.

On December 30, 2019, at 8:24 a.m. Deputy U.B. Smith conducted a traffic stop on a Gold 2005 Chevy Equinox for following too closely to another vehicle on Interstate 64 near the 32-mile marker. Upon approaching the vehicle Deputy Smith detected the odor of raw Marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and began a roadside investigation. Upon running the driver 38-year-old Lamont McKinney of Xenia, Ohio and a passenger in the vehicle through the National Crime Information Center it was determined that neither person had a valid operators license. At that point Deputy Smith with the assistance of Deputy Jennifer Loesch began a roadside drug investigation. After being read his Miranda warning Mr. McKinney admitted to their being a small amount of Marijuana in the vehicle, and after giving consent to a search of the vehicle 171 grams of raw Marijuana as well as a .25 caliber handgun and digital scales were seized from the vehicle. At the conclusion of Deputy Smith’s investigation Mr. McKinney was transported to the Gibson County Jail where he was charged with Carrying a Handgun Without a License with a Prior Conviction and Possession of Marijuana over 30 grams with a previous drug conviction.

He has since posted a $2500 cash bond.

All Criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
