On December 18, 2018, two victims who were visiting Novato reported that their vehicle was broken into while parked on Sotelo Way. Cameras and other high valued electronics and photography equipment were stolen from the vehicle. The burglary was investigated but no immediate leads were developed.
In December of 2019, the victims called the Novato PD Investigations Section and reported they believed they found their stolen camera posted online for sale. Detectives reached out to the potential suspect who posted the camera and requested to meet them.
The seller met with Detectives and produced the camera. Detectives were able to quickly conclude the camera was the camera reported stolen by the victims in 2018.
The subject who was selling the camera cooperated with the investigation and at this point in the investigation, it appears that he bought the item months ago from a another person. He was not arrested.
Although this case remains under investigation, we are thrilled that we were able to recover the stolen property and appreciate the victim’s cooperation & assistance with this investigation.
We would also like to take the opportunity to remind everyone to not leave valuables in your vehicles. HIDE your things, LOCK your cars and TAKE your keys and valuable items with you. Remember, if you see something, say something. We can all work together to reduce crime in our community.
