On January 1, 2020 at 3:00 a.m. the Janesville Police Department responded to a report of gun shots in the area of W. Holmes St. and S. Franklin St. A nearby resident witnessed someone shooting a hand gun from a balcony and other people in the area heard shots as well. Officers located several shell casings in the front yard of 220 S. Franklin St. and saw a gun sitting in a vehicle parked in the driveway with what appeared to be a small amount of blood. No one in the residence would answer the door.

Based on the evidence located and information from witnesses, a search warrant was drafted and executed by the Janesville Police Department SWAT team with the assistance of the Beloit Police Department SWAT team. Three people were detained. Another handgun was found in the residence and the source of the blood in the vehicle was found not to be associated with this incident. One of the people detained, Zerrick Hammett, confessed to shooting the gun in celebration of the New Year holiday. No one was injured as a result of this incident. Hammett is being held at the Rock County Jail.
