North Aurora Police join Neighbors App by Ring

North Aurora, IL – The North Aurora Police Department announced today that they have joined the Neighbors App by Ring to engage with the community in crime prevention & investigation efforts.

Ring is the maker of the popular doorbell camera and other home security products and also the Neighbors App, which is a free app designed to help community members connect and stay informed about what’s going on around them—whether they own a Ring device or not.  While the app will not be monitored 24/7, officers can now view, post, and respond to crime and safety related information posted on the Neighbors app and also request video to help with active investigations.

“The value of joining the Neighbors App is our ability to reach out to our residents and ask for assistance with an investigation.  Then users with video devices can check to see if their device captured any pertinent video and, if they choose, send it to us,” said Chief David Fisher.

Respecting the privacy of our residents is very important to us.  With the Neighbors App, the North Aurora Police Department will never have access to Ring users’ cameras or devices through Neighbors or Ring.  We can ONLY see video that users have posted in the app or have decided to share with us.

Each individual user retains absolute control to determine whether they may have potentially relevant videos, whether or not they elect to share any videos, or opt out of future requests. Police cannot see how many Ring users received a request, who declined to share, or which users opted-out of future requests.

The Neighbors app is available for free on iOS, Android and FireOS devices.  Residents can text ‘JOINTODAY’ to 555888 from their smartphone to receive a link to download the Neighbors app or click here to download directly: https://download.ring.com/neighbors.  Users do not have to own a Ring device to use the Neighbors app and help make their neighborhoods safer.
