Graduation of IMPD 19th Recruit Class

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) and Chief Bryan Roach are pleased to announce the graduation of the IMPD 19th Recruit Class. These 74 new probationary officers are set to begin their field training, serving Indianapolis neighborhoods.

“I congratulate the 74 graduating members of the 19th IMPD recruit class on their great accomplishments so far,” said Mayor Joe Hogsett.

“During the past 24 weeks, the 19th Recruit class has learned about what is needed to be a police officer for the city of Indianapolis.” Stated Chief Bryan Roach.  “They have proven they are ready to go out and continue the dedication to the community of Indianapolis as so many officers have done before them.  These officers represent the future of IMPD and bring with them personal knowledge and experiences which will make them an asset to IMPD and the community.”

The class of 74 new officers includes 2 black females and 8 white females, as well as 1 female who identified as other, 5 black males, 3 Hispanic males, 53 white males, and 2 males who identified as other. This class represents IMPD’s continued efforts to build a police force that reflects the community it serves.

The 19th IMPD Recruit Class was sworn-in on July 1, 2019.  These officers have been assigned to the Training Division for the past 24 weeks. The recruit training curriculum consists of 960 hours of classroom and scenario-based training and 20 weeks of on-the-job training in the Field Training Program.

Mayor Hogsett and the City-County Council have fully funded two recruit classes this year keeping the City on a path to fully funding a net gain of 150 officers over the 2015 staffing levels. Increased staffing levels allow the IMPD to continue to roll out additional, smaller beats as part of the return to community-based beat policing – supporting efforts to target those who perpetrate violence and build stronger relationships with the community. The IMPD is currently recruiting for entry-level and experienced officers to join the department. Learn more and apply at joinimpd.indy.gov.

The 19th Recruit Class is the fifth class of officers to receive their first assignments in a neighborhood instead of a zone since the return to community-based beat policing. Please join us in congratulating the 19th Recruit Class as they begin their service to Indianapolis neighborhoods!
