District Attorney Partners with Gilroy and Morgan Hill Police on a South County Gun Buyback Program.

The Santa Clara County DA’s Office is partnering with the Gilroy and Morgan Hill police departments and others to sponsor a $50,000 gun buyback in the South Bay on December 14, 2019. The Gun Buyback, South County’s first buy back in 25 years, is aimed at getting unwanted weapons out of homes and away from the hands of criminals, mentally unstable people, and children.

On December 14, 2019, people can anonymously turn in unwanted guns at the Gilroy Corporation Yard and receive cash. No questions will be asked about whose gun it is or where it came from. “Surrendering a firearm that is no longer wanted is one way to ensure a gun does not end up being used in a violent crime”, said Morgan Hill Police Chief David Swing.

The buyback comes less than three months after a mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival left three victims dead and 17 wounded; and close to four months after a shooting at a car dealership in Morgan Hill that left two victims dead.

“In the last 6 months we have experienced extreme tragedy caused by gun violence. Our communities are still recovering,” shared Mayor Rich Constantine. “With public safety as its highest priority, the City of Morgan Hill is pleased to partner with the District Attorney and the City of Gilroy in sponsoring a gun buyback event. Jointly, we encourage the community to actively participate in this safe way of disposing unwanted firearms to prevent future gun violence from occurring here.”
