Motorist Suspected in Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash Faces Charges

The motorist suspected in the Oct. 25 fatal hit-and-run crash on Solano Drive has been charged with a felony.

Daniel R. Aranda, 34, of the 3300 block of Shady Grove Lane, is charged with a third-degree felony count of knowingly leaving the scene of an accident that caused great bodily harm or death. Aranda is also charged with a misdemeanor for failing to give information or render aid.

The hit-and-run crash occurred shortly before 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, near the 1400 block of north Solano Drive. Jose Alberto Carrillo, 58, was walking across Solano, from west to east, when he was initially struck by a black pickup. Witnesses told police Carrillo was then hit by a silver car. Both vehicles were traveling north on Solano and both vehicles fled without stopping.

The following day, after learning the pedestrian died from his injuries, Aranda called police and indicated he was the driver of the 2002 black GMC single-cab pickup that struck Carrillo.

LCPD Traffic investigators learned that Aranda briefly stopped his pickup after it struck Carrillo but did not exit the vehicle or render aid. Aranda then drove to a friend’s home on the 1600 block of Spruce Avenue where he left the pickup and called is girlfriend to pick him up.

Traffic investigators also learned of a second vehicle, a Hyundai Elantra, that left the scene after striking Carrillo. The driver of that vehicle, a 78-year-old woman, called police that evening and indicated she did not stop because she believed her vehicle struck a box on the roadway. The 78-year-old woman is not facing charges in this case.
