Subject of SWAT Callout Faces Multiple Charges

The man suspected of driving a stolen vehicle, evading police and barricading inside a second-story apartment on Missouri Avenue has been taken into custody and faces multiple charges.

Corey Lee Willis, 27, is charged with one count each of possession of a stolen vehicle; resisting, evading or obstructing an officer; and one count of breaking and entering a dwelling.

Willis was driving a 2001 red Pontiac Sunfire that had been reported stolen from Ruidoso, N.M. Shortly after noon on Tuesday, Dec. 10, Las Cruces police officers spotted the stolen vehicle at a convenience store near Solano Drive and Idaho Avenue. When officers approached, the driver fled in the vehicle.

The vehicle was then located near the 1500 block of Missouri Avenue. Officers saw as the suspect fled on foot and ran to a nearby apartment building. The suspect broke into an apartment and barricaded inside. Police made several attempts at making contact with the suspect but to no avail. LCPD’s SWAT and K-9 teams were activated.

Audible diversionary devices were utilized but no shots were fired during the incident.

About 2:30 p.m., the suspect jumped from the roof of the two-story apartment building and tried to run from officers. A K-9 unit engaged the suspect and he was taken into custody. Police learned the suspect broke through the ceiling of the second-story apartment before jumping from the roof.

The suspect suffered multiple injuries from the jump and from the K-9 engagement. He was transported to a local hospital. No officers were injured during the incident.

Once released from the hospital, Willis is expected to be booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he will initially be held without bond.
