Subway Robbery Suspects Detained within Minutes of Crime

One of two people suspected of robbing a Las Cruces Subway restaurant Monday evening was identified as an employee of the store.

Lorena Ariana Marin, 22, and Angelo Rey Espinosa, 19, are both charged with one count of robbery. The charge is a third-degree felony.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, Las Cruces police were dispatched to the report of a robbery at the Subway restaurant, 2780 W. Picacho Ave. Officers arrived to learn two masked people, a woman and man, entered the store and committed the robbery. Both suspects fled prior to officers arriving on scene.

Investigators learned two employees were inside the store and a customer was at the drive-thru window when power to the business went off. That’s when a masked woman entered the store, jumped the counter, and verbally and physically threatened the two employees. The woman also ordered one of the employees to get rid of the customer at the drive-thru window.

The male suspect entered the store and stood near the counter while his accomplice threatened the employees behind the counter. The suspects ushered both employees to the back of the store, but one of victims bolted, running to her vehicle. Both suspects then fled the store on foot.

One of the employees told police she recognized the woman’s voice as that of a Subway store employee named Lorena Marin.

While investigating the robbery, an officer was flagged down by someone who saw a white Kia Optima parked suspiciously in the area. Officers located and stopped a white Kia Optima near Maese Lane and west Picacho Avenue. The vehicle was occupied by Marin and Espinosa. Marin acknowledged her involvement in the robbery and indicated she wanted to teach one of the employees a lesson about what could happen late at night in that part of town.

Marin and Espinosa were booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where they are initially being held without bond.
