Suspicious person reported near Shanklin Elementary School today. Lockdown was initiated. Students were safe.
Earlier today, Sheriff's Office dispatch received a report that there was a suspicious person with a firearm near the fence separating Laurel Bay Housing and Shanklin Elementary School. School officials initiated a lockdown and Sheriff's Office deputies responded to investigate.
When deputies arrived, it was learned that a student saw a suspicious person in dark clothing near the fence that separates Shanklin Elementary School and Laurel Bay Housing. The student mentioned it to his/her classmates, and one of the classmates reported it to school officials; adding that the suspicious person was armed.
The student, who actually saw the suspicious person, was located and interviewed. The student advised that he/she never saw a firearm. The student further advised that he/she saw the person outside of a residence on the Laurel Bay Housing side of the fence, not on school property.
No suspicious person was located during a search by Sheriff's Office deputies and the USMC Provost Marshal's Office. The lockdown was lifted.
Thank you for your continued attention to our advisories.
