Happy Thanksgiving and Holiday Season

Sheriff P.J. Tanner and the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office would like to wish Beaufort County residents and guests a happy Thanksgiving and joyous holiday season.

Below are some helpful tips to help safeguard you from falling victim to crimes of opportunity, as well as other unfortunate, but avoidable, incidents:

When you limit the opportunities for criminals, you lessen the chance of becoming a victim of crime ...

Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year, and, as a result, many stores will open much earlier than usual this Friday to accommodate shoppers. Unfortunately, in their rush for seasonal discounts, some shoppers fail to guard against identity theft and fall victim to opportunistic crimes.

When on roads or in parking lots ...
  • When backing out of a parking spot, be mindful of waiting cars, others who are backing out at the same time and motorists who speed through lanes.
  • Take note of exactly where you park your vehicle, which will help you avoid wandering.
  • Always lock your vehicle and activate your security system. The vast majority of vehicle break-ins reported to law enforcement in Beaufort County do not involve forced entry; they occur to unlocked vehicles.
  • When out shopping, it is ideal to put your gifts in the trunk.
  • Avoid storing firearms in your vehicle, as stolen firearms are frequently used in violent crimes.
  • At night, avoid secluded areas and park directly under lights whenever possible.
When in the stores ...
  • Use a credit card to avoid theft of cash. Whenever possible, insert or swipe your own credit card and cover the keypad when entering your personal identification number (PIN).
  • Shopping with a single credit card is ideal. It is easier to cancel one credit card—rather than several—should your wallet or purse be stolen or misplaced.
  • Keep your purse zipped or closed and close to your body. Never leave your purse unattended in a shopping cart, as it takes just seconds for a thief to steal it.
  • Keep a list of account and phone numbers for all of your credit cards in a safe place at home.
  • Only use Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in populated, well-lit locations.
  • Remember, there is increased safety in numbers. Avoid walking alone and remember to leave stores well before closing time to ensure a more full parking lot. If you do not feel safe, ask security to walk you to your vehicle.
If traveling over the holidays ...
  • If you are traveling over the holidays, let trusted family members or neighbors know of your plans. Ask them to stop by your home and check on it regularly.
  • Leave some of your home's exterior and interior lights on and, if possible, leave a vehicle in your driveway. This will make it appear that someone is home and serve as an effective burglary deterrent.
And please remember, if you “See Something, Say Something” and report suspicious activity to 9-1-1 immediately.

Again, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office wishes you a happy and safe holiday season, and as always, appreciates your partnership and continued commitment to the safety of our community.
