The Kern County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce a partnership with Cerro Coso Community College that will provide students the opportunity to take all the courses necessary to become a peace officer. Upon graduation, this will allow those students to be hired as lateral Deputy Sheriffs for KCSO after passing a thorough background examination.
The extended format academy will offer the courses in three levels (modules), each approximately eight weeks in length. The initial module will begin January 22, 2019 at Cerro Coso Community College in Tehachapi with courses concluding on March 16, 2020. Students will then have the opportunity to complete the remaining courses once those dates have been determined.
Cerro Coso Community College will be utilizing KCSO’s shooting and driving ranges, and will employ instructors who have worked at KCSO.
This extended format academy will be beneficial to its students and to KCSO. The community college will offer a way for students to be hired as a lateral (rather than an academy graduate) upon completion of graduation. Students will also be able to continue their employment as they work towards completing the Cerro Coso’s Academy. This will also aide KCSO in recruiting new employees.
