ARREST: Bicyclist arrested for possession of explosive device

On November 24, 2019 at about 11PM, an Emeryville Police Officer initiated a traffic enforcement stop on a 38 year old Berkeley resident, who was riding a bicycle in the area of Park Ave and Watts Street.

Officers discovered bicyclist was active to probation and conducted a probation search of the bicyclist’s property. During the probation search, officers located an object with characteristics of an improvised explosive device. The officers were not able to rule out the item as being an explosive device and summoned assistance from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team (EOD).

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office EOD team responded to the scene and rendered the suspicious device safe. A protective sweep of the area was conducted for secondary devices and Officers deemed the area safe. There were no injuries associated with the suspicious device.

The bicyclist was subsequently arrested and booked on possession of an explosive device and a probation violation.

This appears to be an isolated incident and there is no reason to believe the public’s safety is in jeopardy. The Emeryville Police Department and its staff are committed to increasing the safety of the City and would like to thank the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office EOD team for their assistance.

Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact the Emeryville Police Department, Criminal Investigations Section at (510) 596-3700.
