On November 20, 2019, Novato Police Officers and Detectives responded to Rowland Cinemas, 44 Rowland Way, on a report of a man who had set off a fire extinguisher within a theater. Several people were in the theater at the time and called NPD Dispatch to report the incident. Witnesses at the scene advised dispatchers that the subject left the area in a red colored Ford Mustang. During an area check, NPD Officers located the red Mustang and the driver at Novato Community Hospital. The driver was identified as 18 year old Fairfield resident Joshua Meade. Several witnesses identified Meade as the suspect responsible for setting off the fire extinguisher within the theater. Based on statements obtained during the investigation, it is believed that a second involved and identified subject might have encouraged Meade to set off the extinguisher.
At this point in the investigation, it is not believed that Meade targeted the theater or patrons specifically. Although medical assistance was requested to the scene, no victims or witnesses reported they were injured nor did they seek medical attention while at the theater.
Meade was booked into Marin County Jail for violations consisting of battery, vandalism, releasing a gaseous substance within a theater and disturbing the peace.
