Alert

Winter Storm Warning in effect until 6AM Wednesday

The US National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning that affects Houston as part of the Susitna Valley. The warning is in effect until 6:00 A.M. Wednesday and warns of heavy snow accumulations of 4 to 14 inches throughout the Susitna Valley, with the highest snow accumulations north of Talkeetna up through Broad Pass. Snow may mix with rain and freezing rain at times Tuesday afternoon from Talkeetna south.

Additionally, Houston Jr. Sr. High School has issued an advisory to parents and students that all afterschool activities have been canceled for today due to the weather alert. Their alert advises that parents may pick up their students and absences will be excused.

A Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions will make travel very hazardous. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency as well as a method to call for help if it is needed. For the latest road conditions call 5-1-1 or visit 511.alaska.gov.

Instructions:

Stay indoors during the storm. Prolonged exposure to cold can cause hypothermia.
Walk and drive carefully on icy roads, and try to travel only if you need to. Many injuries and accidents are caused by slippery conditions.
Before driving, let someone know your destination, route, and expected time of arrival. If your car gets stuck, it’ll be easier to find you.
When shoveling snow, take breaks and lift lighter loads. Working too hard can lead to heart attacks.
Stay dry. Wet clothes make you lose body heat, increasing your risk of hypothermia.
