Traffic stop turns up opium and marijuana
Detective Paul Alkire of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged Kevin Tyrone Maxwell, 53, address listed as Hemsworth Street in Durham, with two counts of trafficking in opium or heroin and one count each of possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a vehicle to keep a controlled substance.
On the afternoon of Thursday, Nov. 14, Alkire stopped a Honda Odyssey van on Interstate 40 for speeding and reckless driving and found Maxwell operating the vehicle.
A subsequent search of the automobile by deputies and K-9 Loki turned up 7.4 grams of opium and 38.7 grams of marijuana.
