33-mile pursuit ends in suspect's apprehension
Deputy David Jones of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged Scott Ellis Davis, 44, address listed as Peppers Creek Road in Marion, with fleeing to elude arrest, assault on a government official or employee, resisting a public officer, littering less than 15 pounds and multiple traffic violations.
The N.C. Highway Patrol issued traffic citations to Davis as well.
At 1:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, Jones was patrolling on Toms Creek Road and noticed a red 2007 Ford Focus pulled off the road in front of a locked gate.
The deputy approached the automobile and saw drug paraphernalia. When he asked the driver, later identified as Davis, to turn the car off and step out, he sped off in the Focus.
What followed was a 33-mile pursuit to Lake Tahoma Road, U.S. 70 West, Resistoflex Road, Old Greenlee Road, back to U.S. 70 West, Lake Tahoma, Toms Creek and onto U.S. 221 North. During that time, Davis threw a bag out the window of the vehicle, drove in the direction of a sheriff’s deputy on the side of the road trying to activate a spike strip, ran multiple stop signs and crossed the center line numerous times.
Once on U.S. 221 North at Martin Branch, Davis made a U-turn and headed back south, turning into a driveway on Toms Creek Road and fleeing on foot.
Jones apprehended the suspect after a short foot chase. A search for the bag discarded by Davis was unsuccessful.
Aiding in the apprehension were officers with Marion and Old Fort police departments and troopers with the N.C. Highway Patrol.
