Teenager Arrested for DWAI/Drugs After Fleeing Police In Motor Vehicle

Suffolk County Police last night arrested a 16-year-old Coram male for driving while ability impaired by drugs after he fled police in a motor vehicle.

The teenager was driving a 2009 Hyundai Sonata southbound on Grant Smith Road near the intersection of Route 112 in Coram when a Suffolk County Police officer observed the vehicle cross a double yellow line. The officer initiated a traffic stop at 11:05 p.m. The driver failed to stop the vehicle and sped away from the officer.

The Hyundai made several turns through a residential neighborhood, with police following, before attempting to ram a police vehicle on Seymour Lane in Coram at 11:13 p.m. After several more turns, the driver lost control of the Hyundai and slid off the roadway, striking a police vehicle at the intersection of Bellport Avenue and Horseblock Road in Medford at approximately 11:20 p.m.

A passenger in the Hyundai, Sean Ryerson, 19, of Shirley, was charged with Unlawful Possession of Marijuana and issued a Field Appearance Ticket. A second passenger, a 17-year-old male, was released to a family member at the scene. There were no injuries.

Sixth Squad detectives charged the driver of the Hyundai with Driving While Ability Impaired/Drugs, Criminal Mischief 4th Degree, Unlawful Fleeing and Reckless Endangerment. He was released to a family member at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at Family Court in Central Islip at a later date.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
