A Police Officer and Good Samaritans help rescue occupants from burning vehicle

On November 6, 2019, at 9:39AM, The San Leandro Police Department began receiving multiple calls of a traffic collision at the intersection of Davis Street and Doolittle Drive, which involved a 2010 freightliner big rig truck and a 2001 Ford Ranger pickup truck.  It was reported that the Ford had rolled over and, as a result of the collision, come to rest on its side with the driver side of the vehicle on the street with two occupants trapped inside.

San Leandro Police Officer Kenny Shedd was dispatched to the collision and was first to arrive on scene within minutes.  On his arrival, he saw that the passenger had been partially ejected from the Ford.  Officer Shedd saw that the passenger’s upper body was still in the vehicle while his lower extremities were hanging outside the front passenger window.  Officer Shedd also noticed that the driver of the Ford was trapped inside, dazed, and unable to exit because his passenger was blocking the only exit – the front passenger door window.

As Officer Shedd quickly approached the Ford Ranger, he noticed smoke coming from the vehicle, which in a matter of seconds evolved into fire.  As the fire began to engulf the vehicle, Officer Shedd and unknown good Samaritans, with disregard for their own safety, jumped up onto the passenger side of the Ford and pulled the passenger from the vehicle.  Officer Shedd then returned to the Ford to get the driver out of the vehicle who was still dazed and unable to move.  As Officer Shedd began to pull the driver out of the truck, another good Samaritan assisted by using a fire extinguisher to keep the fire from over taking the passenger compartment.  While Officer Shedd desperately tried to get the driver oriented and in a position to move, Alameda County emergency personnel arrived, successfully extricated the driver from the Ford and extinguished the fire.  As a result of the efforts of Officer Shedd, the good Samaritans, and Alameda County emergency personnel, the driver and passenger only sustained minor injuries.  Both were treated at and released from local hospitals.

“This was a great team effort by our citizens and our first responders.  If it were not for the quick thinking and actions by Officer Shedd, the good Samaritans that helped him, and our Alameda County emergency personnel more than likely both occupants would have sustained more severe injuries,” said Lt. Ted Henderson.

While the primary cause of this collision is still under investigation, it is believed that speed and an unsafe lane change by the Ford were factors.
