Sheriff's Aviation conducts weekend hoist rescue of three hikers in the Forest Falls area.
DATE/TIME: Saturday, November 9, 2019
INCIDENT: Hoist Rescue
LOCATION: Mill Creek Jump Off, Forest Falls
VICTIM(S): Jeffrey Schall, 32 years old from Irvine
Geraldine Delgado, 32 years old from Riverside
Jessica Ramirez, 29 years old from Loma Linda
SUMMARY: On the Saturday November 9, 2019, Sheriff’s Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call from Jeffrey Schall. Schall was hiking with Delgado and Ramirez on the Vivian Creek Trail trying to reach Galena Peak. The three attempted to take a shortcut and climbed a rocky cliff face thinking the top of the cliff would lead them to their destination. When they reached the top, they realized it was not Galena peak but a narrow rocky ridgeline that they could not continue up or climb back down.
Sheriff’s patrol helicopter (40King6) and rescue helicopter (Air Rescue 306) responded. The crew of 40King6 located all three on top of a very narrow rocky ridgeline at the approximate 8,400-foot level just south of the Mill Creek Jump Off in the Forest Falls area. Due to the remote area and the steep rocky terrain, a hoist rescue was required. Air Rescue 306 arrived and lowered rescue personnel to the hikers. One by one, Schall, Delgado and Ramirez were placed into rescue harnesses, hoisted up to the helicopter and transported to a sheriff’s patrol unit and ambulance that were staged few miles away near the town of Forest Falls. All three subjects were found to be in good health with no injuries.
