HOBOKEN RECYCLING RIGHT ENFORCEMENT TO BEGIN NOVEMBER 18

HOBOKEN RECYCLING RIGHT ENFORCEMENT TO BEGIN NOVEMBER 18

Recycling Right enforcement will begin on November 18, 2019. Property owners who do not Recycle Right will receive a neon green “OOPS!” sticker (below) on bags or items that are recycled wrong. The City’s recycling hauler will leave any bag or recycling container with a green sticker at the curb. Residents will need to address the recycling issue identified on the sticker and put the recycling out again correctly on the next recycling date. No fines or summons will be issued for recycling wrong at this time.

How to Recycle Right: The City of Hoboken now has a dual-stream system of recycling, which separates comingled from paper. Comingled recycling (aluminum, glass, plastics numbered 1, 2 and 5) must be empty, clean, and dry, then placed at the curb in blue covered bins or clear bags on Monday nights. Paper recycling (paper, cardboard) must be flattened, then placed at the curb in blue covered bins, tied with string, or secured inside other boxes on Thursday nights. Plastic bags and styrofoam are not recyclable. More information is available at www.hobokennj.gov/recycling.

Why it matters: When residents toss items in their recycling that don’t belong, the system fails. Contamination costs the City extra money, slows down operations at our recycling facilities and causes valuable recyclables to be sent to the landfill. You can make a difference, and recycling is the law! The switch will help increase recycling in Hoboken and reduce the City’s share of landfill waste, and could save taxpayers $200,000 in recycling costs per year.

The Department of Environmental Services and Green Team have been educating Hoboken residents about Recycling Right since before the transition to dual-stream recycling began through Nixle alerts, social media, outreach to property managers, and speaking to residents at community events. Hoboken's Recycling Coordinator is available to answer any questions at 201.420.2000 x4000 or [email protected].
