Census 2020 awareness has begun. Surveys will be available March/April 2020. Learn about this important effort here:

What is the Census?

  • A survey that counts every person living in the United States.
  • The purpose of the census is to establish an accurate count of the nation’s population.
  • The count is mandated by the Constitution and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, a nonpartisan government agency, and occurs every 10 years.
Why is it important to Fannin County, the State of Georgia, and the United States?
  • Over $675 billion/year is distributed to state and local governments using Census numbers.
  • Census data guides decision making on all levels of government and will determine the need of future services over the next decade.
  • Local governments use the census for public safety and emergency preparedness.
  • Businesses use census data to decide where to build factories, offices, and stores, which create jobs.
  • Residents use the census to support community initiatives, involving legislation, quality-of-life, and consumer advocacy.
  • Census is constitutionally mandated for reapportionment of Congress.
  • Census results are used for redistricting at national, state, and local levels.
How will you take the survey and when can you take the survey?
  • Each home will receive an invitation to respond to a short questionnaire—online, by phone, or by mail.
  • Invitations to participate will come via mail or by a census worker beginning in March 2020.
  • Your data is confidential!  Your answers can only be used to produce statistics.
  • By law, your information can not be shared with immigration enforcement agencies, law enforcement agencies, etc.
Other important information:
  • Every Census worker will have a valid ID badge, with their photograph, a US Dept. of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date.
  • If you live in the US, you are required by law to complete the 2020 Census.
  • If you are completing the census for your home, you should count everyone who is living there as of April 1, 2020.  That means everyone who is living and sleeping there most of the time.
Special note:  There are other surveys that you may encounter over the next several months, including the Congressional District Census (related to the 2020 Presidential Campaign) and the American Community Survey.  These are NOT Census 2020 surveys.  If you take one of these surveys, you will still need to take the Census 2020 survey that is released in March/April of 2020.
**Ensuring that our county has an accurate census count is very important. Each person who participated in the 2010 Census brought in approximately $1339 to the state in federal funding per year. Failure to count just 10 households containing 2.5 people in your county could result in the loss of $334,750 over the 10-year census period.
