Automobile Burglary Suspects Arrested

On Wednesday, October 23, 2019, the San Leandro Police Department Criminal Investigation Division, which included the Crime Suppression Unit (CSU), observed suspects looking inside parked vehicles in the Walmart parking lot at 15555 Hesperian Boulevard. Due to a significant increase in automobile burglaries that have occurred throughout the city, the detectives attempted to detain the suspects to confirm whether they were attempting to break into vehicles. However, as the detectives attempted to make an investigative stop, the suspects fled and the led the detectives in a police pursuit that ended at the intersection 98th Avenue and Denslowe Street in Oakland.

At the pursuit’s termination point, officers chased after the suspects on foot and were able to safely detain one of the suspects without incident. The second suspect evaded officers and hid in the backyard of a residence in the 400 block of Caswell Avenue. After an extensive search that utilized the Oakland Police Department’s helicopter, the second suspect was taken into custody without incident. Both suspects were arrested and transported to the Santa Rita Jail on multiple criminal violations.

During the investigation, detectives searched the suspect vehicle and located property that belonged to two other automobile burglary victims. Those two burglaries occurred in Oakland approximately two hours before this incident. Those victims responded to the San Leandro Police Department where they identified and took possession of their recovered loss. The investigation also revealed that this same suspect vehicle, a 2009 Gray Infiniti G37 sedan, was involved in a previous automobile burglary that occurred on October 1, 2019 at 11:32AM, where approximately $7,000 worth of items were stolen at the same location, 15555 Hesperian Boulevard.

Like many cities throughout the Bay Area, San Leandro has experienced a significant increase in automobile burglaries this year. To date, there have been in excess of 1300 automobile burglaries in the city, which is a 46% percent increase from the same time as last year. Most of these automobile burglaries have occurred near coffee shops and other retail shopping center parking lots throughout the City of San Leandro. Typically, suspects are known to look into cars for valuables (i.e. laptop bags, purses, electronics, etc.), break the window for access, and flee within seconds.

Combatting automobile burglaries has been and will continue to be a priority for the San Leandro Police Department. Our detectives stay in routine contact with our law enforcement counterparts from other law enforcement agencies to share information and crime fighting strategies. The San Leandro Police Department will continue to have a high visibility patrols and undercover surveillance operations in the areas of San Leandro where these automobile burglaries have occurred.

While we continue to take steps to combat auto burglaries, we are asking for our community’s help to protect themselves by taking these steps:

* Do not leave bags in your vehicle that can be seen by looking through your windows.
* Remove ALL valuables from your vehicle, especially laptops, tablets, and phones. • When items must be left in our vehicle, place them in your trunk BEFORE arriving and parking.
* Park in well-lit areas.
* Be aware of your surroundings. • Report suspicious activity immediately by calling the San Leandro Police Department at 510.577.2740 or calling 911 if a crime is in progress.
