Advisory

High Wind Advisory Safety Info

Although preliminary information indicates Newark’s power isn’t being affected, it’s really windy out!

Things to be conscious of during a “Wind Advisory or High Wind Warning”:

Prior to an expected wind advisory:
- Remove dead trees and branches which overhang structures.
- Secure lose items left outdoors like patio Umbrellas, lawn furniture, and garbage cans that could cause property damage or injury if blown over.

During high winds:
- Use extra caution when driving, slow down, and always keep two hands on the wheel.
- It is quiet common to see tree branches, garbage cans and other large items in the roadway during these wind storms, so pay close attention to the roadway and as always,
- Refrain from using cellular phones and other electronics which cause distraction.
- High winds can blow your vehicle from its path of travel, especially when driving higher profile vehicles.
- Most importantly, don’t forget to buckle up!
- If possible, avoid parking your vehicle near large trees or tree limbs which overhang the roadway.

Hazards to be mindful of:
- If you locate a downed tree which is causing a roadway or public safety hazard, please feel free to contact the Newark Police Department or your local law enforcement agency.

During these times, there can be numerous similar incidents being reported, so be prepared to provide Police Dispatch with an accurate address of the hazard you’re reporting to ensure a prompt response.

- In the event of a downed power line, immediately call 9-1-1, then the PG&E emergency line at 1-800-743-5000.

- Do not attempt to touch any downed lines, or items which they are in contact with. If a line falls onto your car, stay inside your vehicle and call 9-1-1. Roll your windows down so you can tell anyone who may be approaching to stay back. While awaiting for police and fire to arrive, do not exit your car, avoid touching anything metal inside your vehicle, and try to remain calm because help is on the way.
