Scams/Other

Apple Phone Scam

On Tuesday, 10-30-19 at 3:30 p.m., a 23-year old reporting party said she received a phone call from a phone number that showed up on her caller I.D. as “Apple Inc.” The reporting party said a male subject with an Indian accent told her he was a representative from Apple and informed her someone had accessed her computer and was using her information on pornographic websites. The caller told her that her computer was used to make fraudulent purchases. The caller requested to access the reporting party’s computer remotely, and the reporting party allowed the caller to do so. The reporting party said the subject was manipulating her computer remotely, and he told her she would have to purchase an “encryption card” from a nearby Apple store to fix the issue. The female said the caller also said she could purchase a GameStop, Best Buy or Apple store gift card which would work the same way. The reporting party stayed on the phone with the caller and went to Safeway and purchased $2,000 worth of GameStop gift cards. The reporting party gave the caller the numbers on the back of the card, and the caller said she would be refunded the amount spent. The reporting party said the caller then requested she purchase more gift cards, and after she did some internet research, she realized she was being defrauded. The reporting party said the subject deleted numerous files on her computer.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
