Petaluma PD Investigating Fatal Traffic Collision Involving Bicyclist
On October 23, 2019 at approximately 12:19 PM officers responded to a report of a bicyclist who had been struck by a vehicle in the area of the 1000 block of Lakeville Street. Officers arrived on scene and located the adult male bicyclist and determined that they were deceased.
Traffic Officers from the Petaluma Police Department’s Traffic Team responded to the initial call for service and took over the investigation. While on scene officers learned that witnesses had observed two Semi-trucks in the area of the victim just shortly before the collision. The drivers of these vehicles were flagged down by motorists and remained on scene. Both drivers are cooperating with the investigation.
The investigation is still on going, but preliminarily traffic officers have determined that based on evidence at the scene and witness statements only one of the Semi-trucks appears to have been involved in the collision and struck the victim. Traffic officers further determined that both the victim bicyclist and the Semi-truck were traveling eastbound on Lakeville Street towards the 101 freeway at the time of collision.
At this point in time the cause of the collision is still under investigation. Currently, there is no indication that alcohol was a factor in the collision.
Members of the California Highway Patrol and the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene and are assisting in the investigation of this collision. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Unit was contacted and took custody of the victim. The identity of the victim is not being released at this time pending notifications by the Coroner’s Unit.
