Fatal Vehicle/Pedestrian Traffic Collision

On October 10, 2019, at 11:28PM, San Leandro Police Officers were dispatched to the 15300 block of Hesperian Boulevard after receiving multiple reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. Once on scene, officers found a 43-year-old man from San Leandro in the roadway with life threatening injuries. Emergency medical personnel tended to and transported the pedestrian to Eden Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries. The pedestrian’s identity is being withheld pending next of kin notifications.

A preliminary investigation indicated the driver was traveling northbound Hesperian Boulevard when they suddenly noticed a male lying on the roadway surface in their northbound lane of travel. The driver attempted to swerve their vehicle, a 2001 Toyota, around the male but was not successful and ran over the pedestrian. The driver, whose name is not being released, remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. The driver did not display any signs of intoxication and nothing indicated that this was an intentional act.

“We do not know why the pedestrian laid himself down in the roadway prior to this collision and we will not know if alcohol and/or drugs were factors until the Alameda County Coroner’s Office has completed their investigation,” said Police Lieutenant Ted Henderson.

The San Leandro Police Department Traffic Division responded to further investigate the collision. Northbound Hesperian Boulevard between Drew Street and Springlake Drive was closed for approximately one hour during the investigation.

This collision is still under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed this crash is being asked to contact the SLPD Traffic Division at (510) 577-3208.
