Advisory

PG&E Public Safety Power Shutdown happening now!

Good Morning San Leandro!

As you start your day, you may have noticed that PG&E's Public Safety Power Shutdown is underway throughout the Bay Area. Portions of San Leandro began losing power last night around 11:45 pm., areas that include City Hall and the Police Department.

Fortunately, the police department is equipped with a back-up generator system to ensure there is no interruption to our operation of providing public safety to our community.

If you're impacted by this power outage, you can receive updates from PG&E as to when they expect to restore power by visiting their website and choosing to receive text alerts.

If your day involves driving, please be mindful that many intersections may have a power loss, and thus the traffic control signals may not be working. As of now, there are four controlled intersections in San Leandro that have lost power:

1) E14th St. @ Dutton Ave.
2) E14th St. @ Farrelly Ave.
3) E14th St. @ W. Broadmoor Blvd.
4) E14th St. @ Estudillo Ave.

Remember, an intersection with an inoperative, blacked-out traffic signal should be treated as if it had stop signs in all directions, per section 21800 (d) (1) of the California Vehicle Code.

Generally, drivers –regardless of which direction they’re headed – should stop, then proceed cautiously when it’s safe to do so while adhering to normal right-of-way rules.

Finally, if you must drive through the impacted area of San Leandro, please be extremely cautious when driving through railroad crossings.

In addition to intersections losing power, several residential neighborhoods and some shopping areas have been affected. Please ensure that your homes are ready to receive restored power and unplug sensitive electronic equipment that could become damaged from a sudden power surge.

If you have a home alarm system, it may not be functioning due to the loss of power. Please takes steps to protect your property by locking all doors and windows and, if possible, ask a neighbor to keep watch.

PG&E hopes to begin the re-energization process today, weather permitting. According to PG&E officials, once started, this process could take days to complete.
