Public Safety Power Shutoff - UPDATE

The Town of Moraga has confirmed that PG&E will be shutting down electrical power in Moraga, Orinda and Lafayette beginning Wednesday at NOON (12:00 P.M.).  Note that this is a change from the earlier information.  Approximately 51,000 PG&E customers in Contra Costa County are being affected by these outages.  This shutoff is in response to the weather conditions that are causing the extreme fire weather in our area.  They expect these conditions to ease by Thursday at noon.  Once the weather conditions change, PG&E will begin to repower our area.  However, this takes time as they need to inspect every power line before re-energizing them.

Here are some tips to help prepare:

  • Plan for your family and pet medical needs.  Do you have enough prescription meds?  If you have major medical needs that depend upon electricity, is it safer for you to relocate to a friend’s or family member’s home out of the area?
  • Have an emergency supply kit with food and water.
  • Flashlights?  Extra batteries?
  • Keep all of your mobile devices charged.
  • Identify backup charging methods.
  • Store water and non-perishable foods.
  • If you have a generator, do you have extra fuel?
  • Keep vehicle fuel tanks full.
  • Remember, gas stations, stores and ATMs in the immediate area will be closed.
  • Know how to use the manual release on your garage door.
  • Talk with your neighbors and friends and share your plans.

During the outage:
  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.
  • Monitor freezer and refrigerator temperatures with a thermometer.
  • Use perishable food supplies first.
  • Use generators, stoves and grills outdoors away from windows.
  • Disconnect electronics and appliances to avoid damage from electrical surges.
  • Check on neighbors, animals and family.

Moraga Police are working with Moraga-Orinda Fire and other Lamorinda agencies to keep our communities safe during this time.  We will have extra officers on duty to patrol Moraga.  However, we need your help, which you can provide by doing the following:
  • Watch out for your neighbors.  Have you checked in with your neighbors to ensure everyone knows what is going on?  Keep an eye on each other’s homes and help each other as needed.
  • Drive slowly and safely as traffic signals may not be functioning properly.  The Town will be connecting some to generators while others will be off or flashing red.  These intersections should be treated like a four-way stop and will have stop signs.
  • Report suspicious persons to the Moraga Police (925-284-5010).
  • This situation may cause some people to feel stressed and short tempered.  Please remember that this is a short term situation and is being done to increase safety during extreme fire conditions.  We need to work together and be understanding.

We will continue to provide new information as it is received.  All Moraga schools will be in session tomorrow.  More information about the PSPS can be found at www.pge.com.  Please contact the Moraga Police with any additional questions or concerns at 925-888-7055.
