DATE/TIME: Sunday, October 6, 2019 8:15 a.m.
INCIDENT: Hoist Rescue
LOCATION: Ice House Canyon, Mt. Baldy
VICTIM(S): Sunil Pathakamuri, 40, Simi Valley, Ca.
Prasad Papudesi, 41, Irvine, Ca.
SUMMARY:
On Sunday, October 6, 2019, at approximately 12:39 a.m., Pathakamuri and Papudesi were hiking in the area and became lost and could no longer continue hiking. During their time attempting to find their way back to a trail, one hiker fell and injured his knee. Both hikers were prepared for the conditions in the mountains and are experienced hikers. They began their hike in the early morning hours, Saturday, October 5, 2019, and were beginning to run out of water. The hikers stayed the night in place and would attempt to hike out at sunrise. During the night the hikers became very cold and began to feel dehydrated.
Due to one of the hikers injuring his knee, he felt he could no longer hike out at sunrise. Sheriff’s Helicopter 40King1 responded to the area where they believed the hikers were lost and located them at the 6,800-foot level. Due to the location and terrain Air Rescue 7 was requested for a hoist rescue. Air Rescue 7 arrived on scene and lowered a medic to the hikers. The medic placed the hikers into a rescue harness and they were hoisted one at a time to the helicopter. Both hikers were transported to Cow Canyon to an awaiting ambulance for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
