Skip School Drop-off. Walk, Bicycle, Skateboard, Scooter or Roller Blade Instead!
Wednesday, October 2, is Walk and Bike to School Day 2019. Walk, bike, skateboard, scooter or roller blade to school - it's healthy, benefits the environment and there are community-building opportunities with active transportation.
Before heading out the door, be sure to review the rules of the road:
* All non-motorized vehicles should:
- Ride on the right, in the same direction as traffic using bike lanes when available
- Stop and look both ways before entering the street
- Stop at all intersections, whether marked or unmarked
- Respect traffic lights and stop signs
- Before turning, use hand signals and look in every direction
* Wear a helmet
* Wear white or bright-colored clothing to increase visibility
* Do not talk or text on the cell phone, and avoid other distractions like eating
* Follow instructions from crossing guards
* Make the trip with a sibling, neighbor or friend. If someone you don't know offers a ride, be sure to say "no," yell and run for help
Meanwhile, drivers should slow down, eliminate distractions and proceed with care and caution.
