From the Chief of Police: Secure your vehicles to prevent crime. Also, if you "See Something, Say Something!"

 September 26, 2019

Dear Shorewood Community,

The Shorewood Police Department and the other public safety entities that serve our Village rely on a robust partnership with the community to make this the very best place to live, work and recreate.  The police in particular rely on our residents and visitors to be our eyes and ears, alerting us to concerns so we can respond and investigate to ensure the community is indeed safe.

Periodically, communities experience trends of burglaries or other crimes.  We do our best to alert the public to the potential for being victimized and ask for their help in reducing the likelihood our residents are preyed upon.  Recently, groups of individuals have travelled widely across the entire northeast Illinois region stealing cars and burglarizing cars.   Unfortunately Shorewood has not been immune to this recent wave and despite our best efforts, we too have had cars stolen from our community, cars stolen elsewhere abandoned in our community, and many unlocked cars entered with items stolen.  We have asked residents through social media and by signage around the Village to lock their vehicles.  We have no reports of forced entry to any vehicles and feel strongly that the best line of defense in this regard is to ensure your vehicles are properly secured.

Likewise, we ask everyone to remain vigilant and if you “See Something, Say Something!”  This is a national campaign started many years ago.  This isn’t only for large scale concerns like terrorism or major crimes.  We all play a role in keeping our communities safe.  If you see something suspicious, contact us and an officer will be dispatched to investigate.  As much as we try, we cannot be everywhere and residents in their own homes and businesses are the best gauge of what is out of place, suspicious, or just not right.  Working with you, we exponentially increase our ability to watch over Shorewood and make sure everyone is safe.

Thank you for your assistance in making Shorewood one of the greatest places to live, work and play!

Sincerely,

Aaron G. Klima
Chief of Police
