Update in Traffic Fatality Investigation
The Jackson Police Department is releasing an update in the September 21st single vehicle traffic collision that killed three people. Mary Powell, 55, of Jackson, was driving the vehicle, which was occupied by Powell’s two grandchildren; a female, age eight, and male, age five.
The investigation determined that the car was traveling south on Highway 70 By-Pass near Cartmell Street when it swerved, overcorrected and left the roadway before crashing into a utility pole and tree. The investigation by the Madison County Medical Examiner’s Office has revealed that the driver may have suffered a medical event while driving. Alcohol was also a contributing factor. All three occupants died at the scene of the crash.
