WANTED: Man that stole vehicle then used it to run over the owner; call 652-4000 with information Reply with TIP
McDowell County Sheriff’s Office investigators are currently searching for the man that stole a store clerk’s vehicle Thursday evening, Sept. 19 then ran over him with it, leaving him seriously injured.
The suspect and the stolen automobile were caught on camera at the store.
Shortly before 6 p.m., the man pictured here left Samir’s on Harmony Grove Road in Nebo and got into a maroon 2003 Jeep Liberty owned by Samir’s employee William Matthews, 37, address listed as Wayne Hyatt Drive in Nebo.
Matthews fled toward his Jeep and lunged into the passenger-side window in an attempt to stop the theft. At that time, the suspect traveled at a high rate of speed toward a lifted truck in the Samir’s parking lot, striking the rear bumper and pinning Matthews between the side of the Jeep and the tailgate of the truck.
Matthews was taken to Mission Hospital in Asheville with serious injuries.
