Wells Fargo Bank Robbery Suspect Arrested

On September 14, 2019, Novato Police Department officers responded to Wells Fargo Bank located at 1590 Grant Ave at around 9:50 a.m. A bank employee called Novato Police reported the bank had just been robbed.

While at the bank, officers learned that man entered the bank and asked to withdraw $14,000.00 from an account. An employee replied that he was not able to withdraw that much currency at one time. The suspect then passed a note to the teller. The suspect told the employee to empty the cash drawer.

The suspect fled the bank and was not found in the area. Although a weapon was not seen by bank employees during the robbery, officers learned that the suspect concealed his hand within a jacket pocket, to suggest that he was concealing a firearm, while committing the robbery. No one was injured during the robbery.

While investigating the robbery, officers learned that a similar looking suspect committed a robbery a week earlier in Mill Valley, CA on September 7th, 2019. Detectives from Novato Police Department, Mill Valley Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation combined their efforts and identified the suspect of both the Mill Valley and Novato Wells Fargo Bank robberies as Jared Sung Yoon Herdt. Herdt lives in the Sacramento area and is believed to be transient.

Novato Police Detectives worked with law enforcement agencies in the Sacramento to locate and arrest Herdt. On September 19, 2019, Novato Police Department was contacted by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office who reported they detained Herdt. Novato Police Department and Mill Valley Police Detectives responded to Sacramento and arrested Herdt. Herdt was transported back to Novato, was interviewed, and then booked into Marin County Jail for violations of robbery, burglary, and violating terms of his probation. Herdt is on probation in Marin County from an unrelated offense committed in 2019.

During this investigation, Detectives assigned to the case learned that Herdt is on Federal probation for a series of bank robberies. Herdt was arrested by the FBI in relation to those crimes in 2011. Further questions about Herdt’s previous arrest should be directed to the Federal Bureau of Investigation at [email protected].

The Novato Police Department would like to thank our partner law enforcement agencies who assisted us with this investigation to include the Mill Valley Police Department, the Marin County Major Crimes Task Force and the Coordination of Probation Enforcement (C.O.P.E) unit, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

We are also extremely thankful for the assistance provided by witnesses to this investigation who contributed towards this successful outcome. As a reminder to all: If you See Something, Say Something! Let’s work together to create a safer Novato.
