We’ll be closing roads downtown this Monday for the best parade ever! Come see!!

We are beyond excited to announce that Anchorage is hosting the 57th Annual International Association of Women Police Training next week.  Beginning Monday, September 23rd, through Friday, September 27th, over 700 women in law enforcement from 43 countries will be staying in our beautiful city and attending sessions at the Dena’ina Convention Center.  This will be the third time our community has had this honor.  The IAWP Conference was previously held here in 1985 and 1998.  After a 21-year wait we are more than ready to do it again.
Have you ever seen a collection of flags from so many countries in one place before?  No? Now is your chance!  The IAWP Parade of Nations will kick off at 11AM on Monday, September 23rd.  While you are welcome to watch anywhere along the parade route, the best place will be on 9th Avenue on the Park Strip between E and H Streets.  In preparation for this march, the parade route will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning at 10:30 AM and will be reopened by 1:00 PM at the latest.  We do anticipate the roads being clear much earlier and we will send out a Nixle when they are.
Please see the attached map for the route.  The parade will begin on 7th Avenue in front of the Dena’ina at 11:00 on the dot. It will head east to E Street, south to 9th Street, west to H Street, north to 7th Avenue, and east on 7th back to Dena’ina.  If you live or work in the area, please be cognizant of the extra foot traffic and closures.  Better yet – escape from your office and homes and come watch.
While we are VERY thankful for Mother Nature finally providing the much-needed liquid sunshine, we would really love it if we could have the real sun for all of our guests.  If you would please keep your fingers crossed for sunshine, and refrain from washing your cars next week, we’d really appreciate it.  How great would it be for all of these fantastic women to be able to actually see the mountains and ocean that surround us?  The clouds can come back and block all of our gorgeous fall scenery later.
