Food Tampering Investigation.
The Columbia Township Police Department is currently investigating a “food tampering”, first reported on September 16, 2019.
At approximately 6:15 P.M. on Monday, September 16, 2019, an area resident came to the Columbia Township Police Department office to report a possible food tampering. The resident reported purchasing a jar of Miracle Whip mayonnaise at the Dollar General in Brooklyn, the same day.
A short time after arriving home, she removed the protective seal, and placed it in the refrigerator. Her husband then removed the product from the refrigerator to use it, and when using a butter knife to remove product, he felt the knife hit something hard. Closer inspection revealed a syringe pushed down into the middle of the jar of mayonnaise.
Contact was made at Dollar General, where management immediately removed the remaining exact product from the shelf. These remaining jars are being retained by Columbia Township Police.
The FBI was contacted Monday night, as well as the Food and Drug Administration. The cooperative effort between the agencies is continuing, with further investigation and discussions to occur on Wednesday, September 18, 2019.
Any new developments will be released as they occur.
