UPD #LASD Homicide Detectives Investigate Deputy Involved Shooting, 25200 block of Rye Canyon Road, Santa Clarita

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau Detectives are continuing to investigate a deputy-involved shooting. The incident occurred on Thursday, September 12, 2019, at approximately 12:43 p.m., on the 25700 block of Rye Canyon Road, Santa Clarita.

Detectives have learned that a deputy assigned to Santa Clarita Station responded to the location regarding a suspicious person call. When the deputy arrived, he made contact with the suspect who in turn began to fight with the deputy.  During the altercation, the suspect was able to disarm the deputy of his handheld radio and Taser.

The deputy was able to return to his patrol vehicle and use the vehicle radio to broadcast that he needed assistance. Additional deputies responded to the location and attempted to make contact with the suspect.

The suspect charged at the deputies holding a large wooden stake and began to assault them, which resulted in a deputy-involved shooting.

The suspect was struck approximately twice in the upper torso.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

One deputy was injured and was transported to a local hospital and was treated for minor injuries and was later released.

There is no additional information at this time.

 The investigation is still ongoing.

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene.  These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process.  Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted.  Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
