Man Suspected of Punching Girlfriend, Preventing Her from Leaving

Las Cruces police arrested a man suspected of punching his girlfriend and preventing her from leaving their residence late Tuesday evening.

Gilbert J. Jimenez, 55, is charged with one fourth-degree felony count of false imprisonment and misdemeanor counts of battery against a household member, interference with communications and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer.

About 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, Las Cruces police were dispatched to a possible domestic disturbance at the Sands Motel, 1655 S. Main St. Officers arrived but learned Jimenez and his girlfriend were only arguing, and that no crime had been committed.

About one hour later, police were again dispatched to the motel and learned the argument turned physical, with Jimenez allegedly punching his girlfriend several times and refusing to allow her to leave their apartment. Police also learned that Jimenez had taken the woman’s phone away during the incident.

When officers made contact with the suspect, Jimenez actively resisted and refused to comply with commands.

Jimenez was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he’s initially being held without bond.
