September is National Preparedness Month and hurricane season. It’s also a good time to consider your preparedness.

September is not only designated National Preparedness Month, but it is also the onset of the hurricane season. Last year, Mother Nature made a significant announcement in Hawaii with the eruption of the Kilauea Volcano, and then with Hurricane Florence hitting the Carolinas. This year it’s the Bahamas with Hurricane Dorian. While New Jersey is not currently on Mother Nature’s radar, September is the ideal time to consider your household preparedness. In the not so distant past, October has been visited by the likes of Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy. Attached is a FEMA bulletin containing hurricane preparedness suggestions. FEMA, the Red Cross, CDC, etc., all have websites that offer countless suggestions.

Neighbor to Neighbor

Think about partnering with a neighbor(s) in an emergency situation, especially your elderly neighbors and/or those with health issues. If you believe a neighbor or friend would be vulnerable during an emergency (e.g., a sustained power outage), please consider alerting the Borough Health Nurse Arlene Faustni, for inclusion of that person on her confidential At Risk list. Arlene can be reached at 201-599-6289. Additionally, if you have a neighbor, friend, or relative who is reliant on a life support device, please encourage them to contact Police Sgt. Abate for inclusion on the Police Department’s Oxygen Dependent list. Sgt. Abate can reached through the police desk (201-262-1233), or his direct line (201-599-6316).

Promote Nixle

Presently, Nixle provides the Borough with the means to communicate timely information that would include, but not be limited to, road closures, temporary parking bans, preparedness suggestions, updates during an emergency ( e.g., power outage information), and other Borough related information from the Recreation Department, Health Department and the DPW. Unfortunately, approximately only 25% of River Edge residents are Nixle subscribers. In an effort to increase that number, we are asking you to recommend Nixle to your friends and neighbors.
