Motorcyclist Injured in Crash with Deer

A motorcyclist escaped serious injury Tuesday evening after his bike struck and killed a mule deer on south Sonoma Ranch Boulevard.

The crash occurred shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, near Centennial High School at 1950 S. Sonoma Ranch Blvd.

The motorcyclist, a 24-year-old Las Cruces man, was traveling south on Sonoma Ranch Boulevard. The motorcyclist told police he saw a deer in the roadway and swerved to avoid hitting it. His 2006 Honda then struck another deer on the southbound lane of traffic.

The motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was transported to a local hospital with a possible broken arm and fractured ribs. His injuries were not life-threatening.

The deer died as a result of the collision.

Motorcyclists and all motorists are reminded that deer often cross roadways, foraging for food and water, after dusk and before sunrise when the temperatures are cooler. Deer and other large animals are often drawn to lower elevations where food is more plentiful.
