Advisory

The Rialto Police Department is conducting an investigation into a fatal hit and run traffic collision.

On August 30th, 2019 at approximately 2:50 a.m., the Rialto Police Department received a 9-1-1 call from a citizen who reported that an elderly male was passed out in the middle of Merrill Ave., east of Cedar Ave. Officers from the Rialto Police Department and Paramedics from the Rialto Fire Department arrived on scene and determined that the injured 72 year old male had been struck by a vehicle. As Paramedics initiated life-saving measures to the injured male, he was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at 3:44 a.m.

Through an initial investigation, the first responding officers were able to establish that the victim was hit by a vehicle which then quickly fled the scene. The Rialto Police Department’s Major Accident Investigations Team (MAIT) responded and took over the investigation. The MAIT officers determined that the male was walking outside of a crosswalk from the south curb toward the north curb of Merrill Ave. east of Cedar Ave. when he was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound on Merrill Ave. from Cedar Ave. After the collision, the vehicle failed to stop and fled the scene in an unknown direction.

The investigation is ongoing and the Rialto Police Department is asking for anyone who may have information related to this incident to please call the Rialto Police Department at 909-820-2550 or anonymously through NIXLE (855) 847-7247.
