DATE/TIME: August 17, 2019, at about 1600 hours

INCIDENT: Rescue of downed motorcyclist

LOCATION: Pinnacles, Lake Arrowhead

VICTIM: Male adult

SUMMARY: On Saturday, August 17, 2019, at about 4:00 pm, deputies from the Twin Peaks Station were on off highway vehicle patrol (OHV) in an area known as the pinnacles in Lake Arrowhead. While patroling the fire roads and trails, deputies heard dispatch air a rescue of a downed motorcyclist near the pinnacles. As deputies entered the pinnacles staging area they contacted the San Bernardino County Fire Department. County fire briefed the deputies of the incident and asked if the deputies were familiar with the trail the downed motorcyclist was on. County fire advised they were having a hard time getting to the motorcyclist due to the terrain. Deputies offered assistance with use of the sandrail, which can handle difficult terrain.

Deputies located the trail where the motorcyclist went down. Deputies assisted county fire in carrying equipment to the injured rider. The San Bernardino rescue ship was inbound to attempt a hoist. While deputies were out with county fire and the injured rider, the rescue ship attempted multiple rescue attempts to hoist the injured rider out. Due to heavy winds and safety concerns, the rescue ship could not make additional attempts to rescue the rider. Deputies advised county fire that the sandrail could get to the rider.

Deputies were able to find a path to the trail to get to the rider. Deputies assisted medical aid in carrying the injured rider to the sandrail. The injured rider was placed into the back of the sandrail with the paramedic and transported to the trailhead where the ambulance was waiting. Deputies assisted medical in removing the rider from the sandrail onto a gurney. The rider was placed into the ambulance and transported to a local hospital.
