Crime Alert Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Tuesday, 08-06-19 at 5:54 p.m., a loss prevention officer for Target said he was working on the floor when he heard the alarm sound for the fire exit doors along the south side of the business. The loss prevention officer knew that suspects trying to steal merchandise often flee through the fire exit doors. As the loss prevention officer reached the doorway, he saw a subject leaping into the rear passenger area of a dark green Honda Odyssey. The vehicle accelerated away towards the exit, and the loss prevention officer was able to take a photo of the suspect vehicle with his cell phone. The loss prevention officer returned to the security office and reviewed the camera surveillance system and saw the subject with a shopping cart containing two vacuum cleaners. Officer Greene and Officer Hightower responded to the area and were advised the subject was not in the area. However, they found the subject matching the description near the Chipotle restaurant in Colma. The subject did not have the stolen property on his person, but he did have a $70,000 warrant and was placed under arrest. The subject also had a prescription bottle containing a controlled substance and also had wire cutters in his fanny pack slung around his shoulder. The 39-year old suspect, an Oakland resident, was placed under arrest and transported to jail. An additional charge of bringing narcotics into jail was added to the subject’s charges after deputies found methamphetamine hidden on the subject.

On Thursday, 08-08-19 at 2:23 a.m., subsequent to conducting a traffic stop of a subject in a vehicle driving erratically, Officer Tualaulelei arrested a 26-year old San Jose resident for driving under the influence after she failed the field sobriety tests. This occurred in the area of John Daly Boulevard and the on-ramp to southbound Interstate 280.

On Thursday, 08-08-19 at 12:56 am., Officer Brenes and Officer Lizana were dispatched to the Shell Gas station on Gellert Boulevard on a report of an intoxicated subject who refused to leave the store. The reporting party, a gas station employee, said the subject had a verbal altercation and refused to leave. The subject, a 37-year old Daly City resident, was subsequently arrested for possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine and heroin) and possession of a controlled substance (Xanax) without a prescription.

On Thursday, 08-08-19 at 4:22 p.m., Officer Herrera and Officer Covarrubias were dispatched to a report of two vehicles (a Mitsubishi and a Chevrolet SUV) with subjects possibly sleeping in them in the parking lot of 2171 Junipero Serra Boulevard. Officer Herrera contacted a subject in a black Chevrolet SUV and asked if he owned the vehicle. The subject said he borrowed it from a friend. The subject told the officer he was on probation for “selling drugs”. The subject then admitted to having methamphetamine and heroin in his wallet and a pipe in the glove box. Officer Herrera asked the dispatcher to find a phone number for the owner of the Chevrolet, and the dispatcher asked the officer to verify the license plate. The VIN was covered up, and the officer discovered the vehicle was stolen from Oakland. Officer Herrera then placed the subject, a 41-year old Oakland resident, under arrest and detained the subject in her patrol vehicle. The 41-year old subject was arrested for vehicle theft, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a smoking device, and receiving stolen property. Officer Covarrubias contacted a subject in a Mitsubishi Galant, which was parked right next to the Chevrolet SUV. The subject provided the officer a false name, and a female who was inside the vehicle with the subject provided the officer with the correct name of the subject. The subject, a 38-year old Oakland resident, was on probation, and he was arrested for violating his probation and for providing false information to a police officer.

On Friday, 08-09-19 at 10:37 a.m., a 40-year old female Daly City resident was cited for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia following a traffic enforcement stop at the intersection of El Dorado Drive and Santa Elena Avenue.

On Saturday, 08-10-19 at 2:13 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Walgreen’s at Westlake Shopping Center on the report of a subject wearing a large jacket and carrying two bags who was fighting with security in the parking lot after stealing items from the store. The officers were advised that the subject had walked away from the parking lot. Officer Ciucci saw a subject matching the description who was crossing John Daly Boulevard away from the mall. Officer Ciucci searched the subject and found two glass pipes, a pair of pliers, and a Texas driver's license not belonging to her. The subject, a 45-year old San Francisco resident, was arrested for strong arm robbery, possession of narcotics paraphernalia, possession of burglary tools and misappropriation of lost property. The Walgreen’s loss prevention officer who the subject fought with was unharmed.

On Sunday, 08-11-19 at 12:05 a.m., several officers were dispatched to a residence on the 100 block of Alta Vista Way on the report of a disturbance between a male and a female. The officers arrived and announced themselves and heard a female saying they were fine. The male subject opened the front door and then began to close it on the officers. Officer Collins put his foot at the base of the door to prevent the subject from closing it, but the subject continued to push the door to close it. The subject was unable to close the door, and officers were able to detain the suspect. The subject, a 63-year old Daly City resident, was ultimately arrested for resisting/obstructing a police officer.

On Sunday, 08-11-19 at approximately 1:40 a.m., a 35-year old Daly City resident was arrested (cited) for possession of suspected methamphetamine, possession of suspected black tar heroin and possession of suspected psilocybin mushrooms. This occurred subsequent to a traffic stop at the intersection of Mission Street and Vale Street.

Robberies

There were four robberies during the past week.

On Thursday, 08-08-19 at 1:43 p.m., officers were dispatched to San Pedro Road and Washington Street on a report of a robbery investigation which was originally reported to have occurred in Broadmoor P.D.’s jurisdiction. The victim, a 17-year old Pittsburg resident, said she was jumped by three females that she knew. The victim said the subjects took her backpack and wallet containing $1,300. This investigation is continuing.

On Friday, 08-09-19 at 6:36 p.m., a loss prevention officer for Macy’s said she saw a female subject walk into the store with an empty duffel bag. Via closed circuit television, the loss prevention officer watched the subject select items and place them into the duffel bag. The subject then left the store without paying for the items. When the loss prevention officers contacted the subject, the subject physically fought with them until she was able to flee. The merchandise was left behind, and the suspect is outstanding.

On Saturday, 08-10-19 at 2:13 a.m., a 45-year old San Francisco resident was arrested for robbery after stealing items at the Walgreen’s store at the Westlake Shopping Center and fighting with a loss prevention officer. See “Notable Reports” for more information.

On Sunday, 08-11-19 at 4:35 p.m., Officer Hass and Officer Jackson were dispatched to Gellert Park on a report of a robbery. The victim, a 25-year old Daly City resident, said he was exiting his vehicle when two subjects approached him and demanded him to give him his phone and wallet. Initially the victim told the subjects he did not have anything, and he said the subjects demanded his car keys. The victim said at that point, the subjects “beat him up”, but he retained his keys. The victim could only describe the subjects as being black males in a black Honda. Other officers checked the area but could not locate the vehicle. Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
