The Fremont Police Department is saddened by the tragic incident that took place at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. Our hearts go out to the Gilroy community and those affected by the incident.
Public safety is our utmost priority. We would like to take this opportunity to address our community regarding security concerns at large scale events in the City of Fremont. In preparation for each individual event, the Fremont Police Department works closely with the event organizer, as well as other public agencies to coordinate necessary resources needed to ensure a safe environment for all event participants.
The 36th Annual Festival of the Arts will take place on August 3 – 4, 2019 in Downtown Fremont. We have worked closely with the Fremont Chamber of Commerce throughout the years and have reinforced security measures progressively in the last decade. Some of the security measures provided include:
- In-depth event security assessment and threat analysis; in partnership with federal officials;
- Crash Barriers that are proven successful at preventing vehicle attacks and erratic driving;
- Video surveillance throughout the venue;
- Presence of specialized tactical personnel and equipment, and explosive detecting equipment;
- Additional police staffing at the event, to include uniformed and surveillance officers;
- Elevated observation tower.
During this festival and all other Fremont events, we ask that community members remain aware of their surroundings and report suspicious activity by calling our non-emergency number at
